2nd Grade

My eight year old daughter is in 3rd grade. I have a student who I found out today is reading at a 2nd grade level, his math level is closer to first. Incase you are new here, I teach HIGH SCHOOL SCIENCE. So now I get to find very elementary labs, print them up, give him the supplies, put him over by himself and watch him either not do it, or try to eat them!

I had a really exciting day yesterday though. We making these foldables, I call it the "three car garage", where there are three flaps and the kids lab them and write underneath. Our doors were solid, liquid, and gas. I have a student from China. I asked him if he could come to the board and write S/L/G in chinese. It was cool, so I had the kids add it to their papers. Then I asked my students what it would be in spanish, they started laughing, because basically you add an "O". So you end up with solido, liquido and gaseoso. I also have a student fresh from Sudan, I asked if he could write it in sudanese, he said he could write in arabic, so great, we got out forth language to add to our foldables!

Then I get Forest G added to my preAP class. Same personsality, just the Texas version instead of from Alabama.

Today, for additional viewing, since I was teaching my kids in chemistry technique for seperation based on boiling points, I setup a distallation column, so I could collect back isopropyl I was boiling off a mixture I whipped up! They seem impressed, and many didn't see exactly how it worked until it was explained two or three times!

Science Teachers:
Have you done the gummybear lab? I have had issue when doing it on block classes, because they were becoming too fragile after 48 hours, instead of the designated 24. I used to make them use less water, or two per 50ml....help a little. I just found out if you let them do their thing in the fridge (if you have one available), they grow decently, but maintain a slightly more robust form!

WTF is a kid who is THAT special ed doing in a Pre-AP class? Can't you ask the counselor to put him somewhere else? I have one SE kid in my pre-Ap, but he is the lazy kind of SE kid. Really smart, doesn't do a bit of work. Ever. So I refuse to modify for him. If you need mods, you shouldn't be in an advanced class

Okay, 2nd grader ain't same dude as Forest.

Forest was recruited by me from one of my regular classes, I was inspired by his personality, didn't know his max speed as below 55mph!

Makes a little more sense now. I have a bunch of regular kids who have asked to be in Pre-Ap. If they are passing, I let them in. Just being around other pre-AP kids makes them work better. That, and they don't want to get kicked out because all of their friends are in there. The Pre-Ap kids are loud, and aren't really Pre-Ap according to better school standards, but I do enjoy kids who have at least SOME prior knowledge.
BTW - We're going to have weekly TAKS Jeopardy tournaments after school, beginning in Feb. It looks like the admins will approve decent prizes too...with the grand prize being an iPod. I'll let you know how it goes.
