sad.....

Last week...so I am reviewing a little science history with my freshman, and have a picture of the solar system according to Ptolemy (around 100 AD, I think) and it has the earth in the middle and everything going around it. I ask the class what is wrong with the picture.
No immediate response. I ask everyone to draw to cirlces in the notebook the same size. Forget everything I had said or shown them today, and label one earth and the other the sun. Now, draw a dotted line or arrows or something to show me who goes around who.

Half got it wrong...

That's really sad.

UGH! Isn't that the most frustrating thing? Sometimes I don't know if they seriously don't know the answer, or if they are just really TRYING to NOT think and manipulating the circumstances so that we spend a whole day teaching what they already know and they don't have to really pay attention or be responsible for anything. I'm going to show mine the same picture tomorrow. I'll let you know the results.

Huh. Your comment and DMD's make me really think. I always assume they just don't know. But maybe they're choosing not to know, or not to show that they know...
