Have a big class - you're welcome to try this...

I had each student write their name on a colored popsicle/craft stick. So Johnny for instance, knows he is a red one. All the sticks go in a beaker labeled ABSENT 8th, and there is a regular unlabeled beaker next to it. The students have been told, COME IN, FIND YOUR STICK AND PUT IN OTHER BEAKER. They don't have to check every stick, just the ones their color! Left over sticks are my absent people, so now I don't have to go down a list of 40 names.

One side of the stick has official name in the system, and other has name they liked to be called. Later they'll be numbered to match up to their CPS number.

Then I have my sticks of people who are here to randomly draw when I want to pick people to do things!

I think it should be successful!

Great idea... I may see if I can find those supplies and test it out since I have 35 students and I hate calling roll.

That's a really cool idea. I just have them initial after their name on a weekly roster and then keep it for when they try to say I marked them absent incorrectly. Because, I'm not going to remember who was in class on Tuesday on a random day in August all the way in January.
