Sad state of affairs in my Chemistry Class

I teach two classes of Chemistry with about 30 students per class.

I have this one student on my roster, who only came the first week of school, but hasn't been removed....for unknown reason to me; it may relate to something concerning New Orleans Katrina stuff.

This week is the last week before finals, his grade is the same as 20 of my other students, because our grading policy doesn't allow us to report grades lower than a 50!

That's like 1/3 of my Chemistry students! Ofcourse most of those kids only come 1/2 the time, but there are a handful who come most of the time, they don't listen, or do the assignments, but they come all the time for some reason!

our new principal won't let us enter any grade in our own gradebooks that is less than a 50. Nothing less than a 50 on the final either. Its the stupidest thind I've ever heard of. I'm ready to quit. I still love the kids, but hate the stupid rules. Oh, and I'm not allowed to use the CPS for the final...even though they still have to bubble, their afraid that pushing 4 buttons at the end will ruin our TAKS scores. Yeah. THATS why our scores suck.

I despise the nothing lower than a 50 rule. We have a special ed person who says we can't give any of them anything lower than a 65. How about I just enter straight 90's and go take a nap? Or get back to all the other BS paperwork we have to do.

Yeah, that evil CPS has single-handedly killed the school's TAKS scores. Argh!

Sometimes education sucks. Even in Shangri-La where I am. We were discussing whether or not we could fail every single senior who refuses to turn in a single thing. Would that we could.
