I read this article but the link was shite, so I found a version by one of the authors! Here's the hype:
Terrific Science Program graduates, check out the September issue of the Journal of Chemical Education (page 1317-1318). You’ll see some familiar names as well as a familiar activity with some new twists. Terrific Science faculty Lynn Hogue and Jerry Sarquis have co-authored an article with Bob Blake of Texas Tech University on classifying matter with paper clips. This activity, featuring easy to gather materials, helps students to visualize the chemical world and comprehend the language of chemists.
