I think its important that we all have heroes, because it is a source of happiness.
Two years ago, if you asked who my heroes were, I would have said the following four fellows:
Albert Einstein, Stephen Hawking, Richard Feynman and R. Buckminster Fuller. If I had to name a fifth, I would have probably said Professor Walter Lewin of MIT. I know for a fact, you can find each of those gentlemen in a photograph where they have a chalk board behind them.
Now if you ask me who my heroes are, I have a totally different list. For one thing, all these are still alive, and that one fact is what makes them so special. They all have special knowledge, they all have learned and now they teach (and still learn) what they know about survival.
My new five heroes are: (listed by order I learned of them)
Les Stroud - of Survior Man show fame
Cody Lundin - of Dual Survival show fame, aboriginal skills specialist
Dave Canterbury - of Dual Survival show fame, survival skills from military/hunter experience
Ray Mears - UK based Bush Crafter, nature lover, author and TV host
Les Hiddins - "The Bush Tucker Man", former TV host, author, Australian aboriginal food specialist
You put these five together in a room and they would probably enjoy story telling, and asking each other questions and sharing their knowledge.
If you could put all ten in a room, I think my original BRAIN bunch would actually enjoy my OUTDOOR bunch, because of all they could learn, and I think they would enjoy the learning experience. I think my OURDOOR bunch would love they are teaching a BRAIN bunch something, and feel good about that.
Moral of the story - LEARNING + TEACHING = HAPPY

They could probably teach today's cushy young people something about surviving outside. And they survived without gadgets, right?
